Shallow and everywhere
The spawn. Shallow, willing fish, and the easiest month of the year to put a first timer on them.

- The pattern
- Everything was shallow. A couple of cold fronts pushed them back out, but never far and never for long — give it a day and they were back where they had been.
- Crappie
- On the bank and around dock cables in three to eight feet. Numbers days rather than size days, which makes it the right month to bring kids.
- Bass
- Spawning through the middle of the month and guarding after. We left the visible beds alone and caught plenty working the flats either side of them.
